V8 Vega Project

This is what I did with the $50.00 1972 Vega I bought as junk in 1984. I had originally intended to do a standard small block engine swap but by the end of the first day we had the front of the car cut off at the windshield and were already thinking full frame and big block. In the photos below we had a 60 over 454 (468ci) with a single 850 Holley double pumper, 620 lift cam and 11:1 pistons. The car was fully tubbed, tube frame, removable front end and a narrowed Chrysler 8 3/4 rear with 4.11 gears. (I cut and welded the axles) We ran 14X31 slicks on the rear and Canadian Tire Whippets with Super Tricks on the front.

Best time was 11.03 sec @ 127 mph in the 1/4 - I put the mufflers and N5015 street tires back on and drove it to school the next day.

These photos show the car at Motion 85 Car Show in Toronto. I had repainted the car and supercharged the engine. We ran 22 lbs boost with twin Holley 850 double pumper Alcohol carbs. The performance was incredible, I expect the car would have run in the low 10s judging by the way it pulled on the street. Unfortunately we collapsed a rod while preparing the car for the drag strip at Cayuga and destroyed the engine.  I could not afford to rebuild so I sold the car as a rolling chassis with engine parts in 1986.
